Chain link fences are a popular and practical choice for homeowners and businesses alike, thanks to their affordability, durability, and low maintenance requirements. However, like any outdoor structure, chain link fencing does require some care and upkeep to ensure that they look and perform their best. Here are some tips for maintaining your chain link fence: A. Clean it Regularly: Dirt, debris, and grime can accumulate on your fence over time, making it look dingy and dull. To keep your chain link fence looking its best, it's important to clean it regularly. You can use a garden hose, a bucket of soapy water, and a scrub brush to remove any dirt or stains. If your fence is particularly dirty or stained, you may want to use a pressure washer to blast away dirt and grime. B. Inspect it for Damage: Regularly inspect your chain link fence for signs of damage, such as rust, dents, or loose fittings. Catching these issues early can help prevent them from getting worse and potentially causing more costly repairs down the line. If you do notice any damage, make sure to address it as soon as possible. C. Apply Rust Inhibitor: Chainlink fences are susceptible to rust, especially in areas with high humidity or saltwater exposure. To prevent rust from forming on your fence, you can apply a rust inhibitor spray. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully and apply the spray in a well-ventilated area. D. Trim Vegetation: Overgrown vegetation can damage your chain link fence by rubbing against it and causing scratches or even punctures. To prevent this from happening, be sure to trim any bushes, trees, or vines that are growing near your fence. E. Repair and Replace: Finally, if your chain link fence does need repairs, make sure to address them promptly. Small repairs, such as replacing a damaged section of chain link or tightening loose fittings, can help prevent larger issues from developing. And if your fence is beyond repair, consider replacing it with a new chain link fence that will provide years of reliable performance. A Recent Project Our team at Markham Fence was contracted by a local childcare centre in Cornell to install a perimeter chain-link fence around their outdoor play area. With the City of Markham’s population exceeding 353,000 and continuing to attract families seeking high-quality amenities in neighbourhoods such as Cornell, Unionville and Wismer, it’s critical that institutional properties meet both safety and aesthetic expectations. We coordinated closely with the facility’s operations team to ensure minimal disruption to daily programming and compliance with local guidelines for fence height, access gates and sight‐lines for supervision. Our process began with a full site survey—verifying property lines, existing obstructions (including underground utilities), and ensuring appropriate clearance for equipment. We removed older fencing, set galvanized steel posts deep in concrete footings to withstand freeze–thaw cycles typical in the GTA, and installed 6-foot (approximately 1.83 m) height chain‐link mesh with a powder-coated finish for durability and low maintenance. We further added a child-safe locking gate, flood‐resistant footing design (important given the area’s well‐documented clay soils and drainage considerations) and signage integration. The result is a secure, visually clean fencing solution that meets the institution’s operational, safety and maintenance needs—and gives stakeholders, staff and families peace of mind. With regular cleaning, inspection, and maintenance, your chain link fence can look and perform its best for years to come.
